Understanding Grandfamilies: Treating Children and Families in Kinship Placements (Orono)

Description: Sponsored by Families And Children Together (F.A.C.T.) and The University of Maine Center on Aging, this seminar will give clinicians more insight into the highly complex issues that Grandfamilies encounter and provide ideas on how to treat these families successfully. This seminar will offer experienced guidance in various clinical issues, including attachment, behavioral problems, kinship complexities, divided loyalties, and issues of loss and grief.

Grandfamily members and F.A.C.T. staff will also offer insight and experience.

Participants who attend this session will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of living with multi-generational families.
  • Understand the stressors each family member lives with on a daily basis.
  • Gain insight into the complexities of the web of guilt, shame, protectiveness, loss, and love with which Grandfamilies cope.
  • Be given specific ideas for successfully treating Grandfamilies and the children they are raising.
