Mohsen Shahinpoor, Ph.D., P.E.
Dr. Mohsen Shahinpoor, Ph.D., P.E., Fellow of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), Fellow of IOP (Institute of Physics), Fellow of RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry) and Fellow of NAI (National Academy of Inventors), is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering, who also served as R. C. Hill Professor and Chair of Mechanical Engineering Department 2007-2014. He also served as Professor of Biomedical Science and Engineering, Graduate School of Biomedical Science & Engineering, University of Maine, since 2008, and was the chief scientist & director of biomedical products, Environmental Robots Inc., Albuquerque, NM, professor of surgery, Division of Neurosurgery, School of Medicine, University of New Mexico, and Regents Professor of CAD/CAM and Robotics, School of Engineering. He has been involved with potential applications of smart multi-functional biomimetic wearable materials to gerontology; ionic Polymer metal composites as dexterous manipulators and haptic feedback/tactile sensors for minimally invasive robotic surgery; development of soft parallel robots equipped with polymeric artificial muscles; ionic polymer metal composites (IPMCs) as smart multi-functional materials and artificial muscles; and robotic surgery with smart materials, robotic structures and artificial muscles. Dr. Shahinpoor has done research with faculty members of other engineering and non-engineering disciplines for synergistic research and discoveries in interdisciplinary disability studies, social work and companion co-robots (Cobots), with medical and biomedical faculty on smart tissue manufacturing, ophthalmological problems and synergistic development of vision improvement products. He is also a series editor for Smart Materials volumes published by the Royal Society of Chemistry, and has served as general chair of International Congress on Biomimetics, Artificial Muscles and Nano-Bio.
